Born in Thunder Bay and raised on the land near his community, Whitesand First Nation, Darian has lived in Northern Ontario up until he moved to Kingston to attend Queen’s University. A proud Thunder Bay resident, Darian attended Sir Winston Churchill C&VI to graduate with the International Baccalaureate Diploma while advocating for First Nations children as a Public Appointee.
Darian has always been championed by strong women. Growing up with the support of his great-grandmother, his grandmother and many ‘rez’ aunties, Darian has learned how to lead his life using empathy, respect, responsibility, acceptance, and integrity. But also, like the strong women whom he has learned from, Darian has lead a life with open arms, tasked with a mission to help all youth achieve their full potential. That’s why he’s both an Ontario Liberal and member of the Federal Liberal Party, working to help elect or re-elect the strong women whom have championed him, Sophie Kiwala and Patty Hajdu.
Since Darian was in high school he became heavily involved in advocating for First Nations youth in the Ontario government, starting with the Minister of Education, and then Premier. Both happened to be Kathleen Wynne, Darian’s #1 mentor and teacher. With the support of 13 Chiefs, Darian became the primary advocate for youth from the Independent First Nations to the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council (OFNYPC), where he then became the lead on Education issues and Intergovernmental Relations.
Since arriving at Queen’s, Darian continued his work on the OFNYPC; later became President of the Arts and Science Class of 2018; co-founded the Kingston Aboriginal Youth Leadership program; as well as founded the Queen’s Native Student Association conference series aimed at creating debates and pushing the reconciliation agenda at Queen’s. All of these activities later led him to receive the Ontario Lieutenant-Governor’s Lincoln Alexander Award for his work on anti-racism in the province.
