The Indigenous Peoples’ Commission (IPC) and the Young Liberals of Canada (YLC) of the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) are pleased to announce the appointment of Darian Baskatawang to the position of Indigenous Youth Representative of the IPC and YLC
Darian is a member of the Whitesand First Nation in Ontario and has an extensive background of engagement with Indigenous youth. He has been a leader in youth councils and programs at both the regional and national levels and the recipient of numerous awards. He brings experience along with enthusiasm to the IPC and YLC for moving ahead with our collective goals, objectives, and activities.
“IPC’s important work of engaging Indigenous youth within and outside of the Liberal Party of Canada is of vital importance,” IPC Co-Chairs Lisa Abbott and Chad Cowie expressed. “Making sure Indigenous youth have an opportunity and avenue to share their opinions and thoughts will be easily optimized through Darian’s leadership and contributions within the IPC,”
“The Young Liberals of Canada can’t wait to start working with the Indigenous Peoples’ Commission. Our government has made a historic commitment to addressing the issues facing both Indigenous peoples and young Canadians, and we’re excited to help make lasting progress. These challenges facing youth and Indigenous Peoples have been ignored for far too long, and we’re hopeful that we can apply new ideas and energy to old problems.” Mira Ahmad, President YLC and Jamie Benoit, Vice-President YLC.
The IPC represents and promotes the interests of Indigenous members of the Liberal Party and encourages the active and equitable participation of Indigenous people at all levels of the party structure. The YLC represents and promotes the interests of youth members of the Liberal Party and encourages young Liberals to share ideas and be actively engaged in making positive changes for youth.
