OTTAWA – The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party of Canada stands firmly with the leadership of National Aboriginal Organizations, Indigenous Nations, Premiers, Territorial leaders, and countless families and relatives across the country as they continue their call for a national public inquiry to bring greater awareness, understanding, and justice to Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Last week, premiers from across Canada – along with the leaders of the 5 National Aboriginal Organizations – demonstrated true leadership and stood up for action on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls by renewing their call for a National Public Inquiry; support for the establishment of a national round table with federal participation; and a commitment of a Socio-Economic Action Plan for Aboriginal women.

“Preventing these tragedies will only occur once all necessary steps are taken, so it is critical to continue moving forward, ideally with a rapid pace.” said Ronda Evans, the APC National Vice-President (Women) “May these positive steps forward bring hope to the families of 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women for justice and answers.”

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission recognizes that the marginalization of Indigenous women through systemic racism and neglect renders Indigenous women particularly vulnerable to violence and victimization within Canadian society.   A comprehensive, nationwide inquiry into the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls is necessary to understand and address the institutional and systemic conditions at the root of the multiple forms of violence suffered by Indigenous women.

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission and the Liberal Party of Canada have long advocated for a national public inquiry into the issue of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. We will continue to push for positive change with Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada and will resolutely maintain our commitment to seeing a national public inquiry into this national tragedy.
