Ottawa – In a contest that saw 8 Indigenous Liberal candidates elected and a majority Liberal government swept to power, all that can be said is what a night!

“On behalf of the Indigenous membership of the Liberal Party of Canada, our 9 provincial and territorial commissions, our National Executive and National Board, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team from coast-to-coast-to-coast on their stunning election victory” said Caitlin Tolley and Kevin Seesequasis, national Co-Chairs of the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission. “Liberals everywhere can be proud of what we did together!”

On Monday, October 19th, Canadians elected 184 Liberal MPs to the House of Commons, including 8 Indigenous Liberal MPs who will form the Indigenous Liberal Caucus (ILC):

  • Jody Wilson-Raybould, Vancouver-Granville, BC
  • Michael McLeod, Northwest Territory, NT
  • Hunter Tootoo, Nunavut, NU
  • Robert-Falcon Ouellette, Winnipeg Centre, MB
  • Dan Vandal, Saint Boniface-Saint Vital, MB
  • Don Rusnak, Thunder Bay – Rainy River, ON
  • Vance Badawey, Niagara Centre, ON
  • Yvonne Jones, Labrador, NL
  • Marc Serre, Nickel Belt, ON (added 2016)
  • Randy Boissonnault, Edmonton Centre, AB (added 2016)

“We have before us a great opportunity to bring positive change to our nations and communities. The Liberal Party of Canada has made many important commitments to Indigenous peoples and now is the time to join together to implement those commitments and revitalize the nation-to-nation relationships that have been part of Canada since the beginning. We are looking for your support as we work to implement the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; as we work to close the gap on First Nations Education, settle outstanding Métis claims, fix Nutrition North, and of course, launch a national public inquiry into Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada.” added Jesse McCormick, APC National Vice-President (Policy).

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission looks forward to working with our new Prime Minister and the Indigenous Liberal Caucus to impact change in Canada. We are proud of all the Indigenous Liberal candidates who ran in the federal election and we look forward to working with Indigenous peoples from across Canada to renew the relationship and to strengthen our communities through real change in Ottawa.
