Statement: Condolences on the passing of Elijah Harper

OTTAWA – The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party of Canada released the following statement on news of the passing of Elijah Harper:

Canadians woke today to hear of the passing of Elijah Harper, former chief of the Red Sucker Lake First Nation, cabinet minister in the Manitoba Legislature, and Liberal Member of Parliament.

Mr. Harper’s leadership, integrity and public service in the cause of Aboriginal rights, and in the pursuit of reconciliation and healing across Canada has left a lasting, concrete impact. His efforts will be forever woven into the constitutional fabric of our nation and will serve to inspire Aboriginal people and Canadians for generations to come.

The national executive of the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of this truly inspirational man.”
