APC Welcomes IACHR Report on MMIWG January 13, 2015 Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Reddit Share on LinkedIn Email For Immediate Release January 12, 2015 OTTAWA – The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission welcomes the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in British Columbia, Canada, released on 12 January 2015. The report analyzes the context in which indigenous women have gone missing and been murdered over the past several years and the response to this human rights issue by the Canadian State. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has reached many important conclusions and recommendations, including: The disappearances and murders of indigenous women in Canada are part of a broader pattern of violence and discrimination against indigenous women in Canada… Addressing violence against women is not sufficient unless the underlying factors of discrimination that originate and exacerbate the violence are also comprehensively addressed… AND The IACHR strongly supports the creation of a national-level action plan or a nation-wide inquiry into the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, in order to better understand and address the problem through integral approaches. The IACHR considers that there is much more to understand and to acknowledge in relation to the missing and murdered indigenous women. This initiative must be organized in consultation with indigenous peoples, particularly indigenous women, at all stages from conception, to establishing terms of reference, implementation and evaluation. The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission, along with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia and across Canada, believes that this national tragedy demands a national response. Join us and tens of thousands of other Canadians in calling for a national inquiry. Please add your voice to the call for action, sign our petition. Click here to read the IACHR press release.
