Perry Bellegarde elected National Chief of Assembly of First Nations

WINNIPEG – The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party of Canada congratulates Chief Perry Bellegarde on his election as the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Jesse McCormick, APC Vice-President of Policy stated:

“The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party of Canada was proud to have the opportunity to attend the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly in Winnipeg this week and to meet with Indigenous leadership from across the country. We welcome the leadership of newly elected National Chief Perry Bellegarde and we look forward to working with him and First Nations throughout Canada to promote reconciliation and continue making positive change with First Nations.”

In his campaign speech to the Chiefs in Assembly, National Chief Bellegarde spoke of the importance of First Nations driven initiatives to improve the lives of First Nations citizens and called for renewed efforts to achieve culture and language revitalization within First Nations communities.

Cindy Woodhouse-Nepinak, the President of APC in Manitoba added:

“We look forward to working with our new National Chief to bring renewed hope to First Nations and Canadians that the scourge of poverty and inequality which plagues Indigenous peoples will be finally be addressed with dignity and respect.”
