OTTAWA – With today’s #IdleNoMore rally on Parliament Hill and so many more across the country, the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party of Canada issued a call-to-action to all Canadians to unite under the #IdleNoMore banner and demand the Harper Government address long-standing issues affecting Indigenous peoples—issues that if left unaddressed, will undoubtedly lead to long-term damage and confrontation.

#IdleNoMore is symbol of strength and unity; our ancestors fought for our rights and we must honour that by continuing the struggle” said James Harper, APC National Vice-President (Youth). “The Prime Minister has made it abundantly clear the disregard his government has toward the agreements made between Indigenous peoples and the Crown – and we’re seeing that our people will no longer sit idly by.”

#IdleNoMore began as a grassroots indigenous movement to oppose Bill C-45 and the many pieces of legislation that were brought forward with little to no consultation with Indigenous people. The movement has had a strong online-presence through social media networks including Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. There have been numerous rallies from coast-to-coast-to-coast with thousands of participants finding unique ways to express their solidarity and unity. More recently, peaceful protests in the form of round-dance flash mobs have taken hold.

We call on all Canadians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike – it’s time to stand together, to honour our ancestors and to protect the future of our children, and our children’s children.” continued James, “we pledge to be #IdleNoMore!”
