OTTAWA – The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party of Canada continues to stand firmly with the countless families and relatives, and the  leadership of National Aboriginal Organizations, Indigenous Nations, Premiers, Territorial leaders, International committees and organizations across the country as they continue their call for a national public inquiry to bring greater awareness, understanding, and justice to Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (#MMIWG).

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission supports the framework developed at the Peoples’ Gathering for families of #MMIWG and their supporters and understands how imperative it is that we involve those who are most affected in meaningful ways to ensure successful outcomes.

Participation at the National Roundtable discussions in Ottawa included several family representatives of #MMIWG, Premiers, Indigenous leaders, and Prime Minister’s representatives.  Despite the lack of federal leadership, the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission is hopeful that the framework developed provides a step in the right direction.

“The dignity of over 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls continues to be violated by inaction and steadfast refusal by the Harper Government to act on the calls for a national public inquiry – despite overwhelming local, regional, national, and international support.  This inquiry should not be a battle of wills.  In fact, it should not be a battle at all.” added Ronda Evans, the APC National Vice-President (Women).

Clearly, as Dr. Carolyn Bennett stresses “there is also a clear and unambiguous consensus on the need for a national public inquiry into this tragedy.

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission and the Liberal Party of Canada will continue to demand a national public inquiry into the issue of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
