Statement: Congratulations Justin Trudeau April 17, 2013 Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Reddit Share on LinkedIn Email For Immediate Release April 17, 2013 OTTAWA – The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission released the following statement on the election of Justin Trudeau as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada: “The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission is proud to congratulate Justin Trudeau on his election as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. We also commend the candidates, campaign staff, and countless volunteers who worked tirelessly to present their ideas and their vision of a more socially just, prosperous Canada. Throughout the leadership race, the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission worked to raise the profile of issues affecting the first peoples of this land – education funding, missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, #IdleNoMore, the need to replace the Indian Act – the list goes on and on. Mr. Trudeau’s victory – a clear mandate from members and supporters of the party – signals a strong desire for a new vision for politics; politics that includes rather than excludes, politics that engages rather than divides, politics that can and must do better on these, and so many other critical issues. It is in the spirit of doing better that the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission is eager to work with Mr. Trudeau to re-establish the nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous peoples – a relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation, and a relationship that will continue to make the positive change that all Indigenous people so richly deserve. Congratulations Justin, let’s get to work! – 30 – For more information on the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission, contact: Kevin Seesequasis Vice-President (Communications) Contact Us
